Field Observation Node (FON)
The Field Observation Node (FON) is a compact, portable system for continuous 360° video documentation in remote environments. Designed around the DJI Osmo 360 action camera, it captures high-resolution footage with exceptional low-light performance. It is also equipped for timelapse recording, enabling long-term monitoring of field sites such as Hessdalen and other locations of scientific interest.
We maintain three Kits instead of just one. This gives us several important advantages in the field:
Cover More Ground
Three teams can cover more area and capture events from different angles.
Enable Manual Triangulation
Multiple teams observing the same object can triangulate its distance, altitude, and speed.
Training & Practice
One kit can be used to create controlled test scenarios (e.g., moving a flashlight at different speeds or distances). The other teams practice identifying and measuring, learning to estimate motion, distance, and size in the field.
Content in the FON kit:
DJI Osmo 360 actionkamera, Camera Protective Bag, Lens Cleaning Cloth, 3 x batteries, adapter mount, selfie stick, rubber lens protector, mini tripod,
2 x 512 microSD cards, cardholder, a short USB-C cable, a long USB-C cable, 20,000mAh powerbank, a tech bag and a bag for all the equipment.
In kit #2: a flashlight.
In Kit #3: binoculars and a charger (2x USB-A, 4x USB-C)
All kits should contain the same.
We plan to add: Compass, EMF meter, night vision googles, and more!
The kit will include a QR code with a link to a Field Trip Guide to help with:
How to use the equipment
Maps suggesting where to go
How you should monitor the sky
How you should report a sighting
First of all - all kits will be used during the Field Trip Week - this is first week in September - every year. No kits available then - unless you sign up to join the Field Trip :-) Field Trips
You call me (Fred Pallesen) at +47 94086203
I will tell you if they are available or not when you want to use them
You will pick it up at Bjørns farm
You have to provide identification and sign a paper
After use, you return the equipment to Bjørn
That's it!

Use it with the 20.000 mAh powerbank and set it up for a time-lapse: take a picture every secord!
Note: There is no sound recording during a time-lapse.
A time-lapse with external power can record all night!
Back to your cabin:
Pop out the microSD card
Plug in the microSD card reader and download all
This way you do not have to install the DJI app and connect it to an account.
Put your recording into this folder:
At root level there is a README file. Check this out.
You should make a folder and upload your content from the microSD card.
Then you can reformat the card and record another day/night.
Thank you for helping us collecting data.
