The Observations Revisited
Erling has added "Observation done by people" for every year on the old hessdalen site:
https://old.hessdalen.org/observations/
The document to the right is just a compilation of all these stories.
NOTE: The years 1982 and 1983 has just been updated in the old site but all these stories have not been included in the summary to Observations document!
This project should re-visit some of these stories to get more details and more information about the observation and the observers - if possible.
One source is the internet
- there are many documentaries where some of the stories are recorded:
The goal is to have the most interesting stories highlighted and commented.
Observations by Jon Arvid Aspås in 1981
From
Himmelen i Hessdalen - norsk tekst
It started before Christmas in 1981.
(From what other people told him) It looked like the light went down behind the mountain "Finnsåhøgden," and behind that, there's a small valley. Beyond that, there's another mountain, and further back, there's Ledalen. It's a vast valley, several kilometers wide.
We decided one evening to go and take a look in there. We hadn't been sitting for long before we saw a light on the other side of the valley. It wasn't up in the sky – it was down low, so we could see it against the mountains.
Suddenly, another light appeared over there, next to the first one. And after watching for a while, a third light appeared – so then there were three on the hillside.
We sat there with binoculars, watching.
Suddenly, the one in the middle and the one on the right started moving. The one on the right came toward the one in the middle, so they crossed paths and swapped places.
After sitting and watching for a while, the one in the middle began to rise – maybe 200 to 300 meters, I’d estimate. Then it stayed there. But suddenly, the light grew stronger and started ascending.
When it went up, another light came down to take its place – so it was clearly waiting for the other to leave so it could take over its position. It's certain there was communication between them.
The one that ascended leveled off and came straight toward us. Around that time, the moon had risen. It passed quite high above us, and in the moonlight, we could see it as it came overhead. The moonlight reflected off the object. It was clear that it was made of solid metal. It looked like there was a line of lights along it.
That was the first time I saw it, but we ended up sitting for three hours, watching the lights on the hillside on the other side of the valley. The one on the left didn't move the entire time we were there – but around it, we saw what looked like light particles. Back then, headlamps didn’t exist, but thinking about it now, it looked like headlamps circling the object.
It was incredible to see.
I know for sure that what we saw was a solid craft.
It was an evening when my eldest son and I were working on repairing a snowmobile out in the yard at home. We were working there in the dark, and then a glowing orb came down through Hessdalen.
When it came right outside our barn, it stopped and stayed there calmly for maybe about five minutes.
But then it started moving westward toward the mountains, and that’s when it turned on lights down toward the ground. I can tell you, those were some powerful spotlights – it was almost like the sun shining on the hillside as it rose there. That there was a lot of energy onboard is for sure. That’s probably what has impressed me the most about this UFO stuff.
Sometimes we could see the light coming.
Then the lights could stop and just hang in the air at various heights.
But there’s a fair amount of air traffic over here – and it was so strange that when planes came, the light turned off. When the planes had passed, the light came back on again.
No one can tell me otherwise; they were controlled by something.
The first two winters, I spent a lot of nights roaming around here because I thought I could get as close to the phenomenon as possible, but it didn’t work.
They had better control of where I was than the other way around – that’s for sure.
The observation by Leif Havik in 1983
While hiking near Hessdalen on August 23, he experienced a chilling encounter when a silvery, wingless, airplane-like object emerged from what seemed to be an invisible portal in the sky.
As he observed the craft, Leif felt intense physical sensations, including a tingling in his limbs, oppressive pressure in his head, and a loss of free will, culminating in a blackout and an inexplicable mental "voice" delivering messages before he hurriedly returned to his car.
The observation by Arnfinn Grøtådal in 1983
Arnfinn and his wife heard a swishing sound overhead and saw a saucer-shaped craft landing below their barn. A hatch opened, and three non-human long-armed creatures emerged. They began walking around the craft, inspecting it, and banging on its surface.
After some time, the beings returned inside the craft, which lifted slightly off the ground and hovered for a moment before taking off at incredible speed.

The observation by Kari Helene Keiseraas in 2018
Then I saw a massive "machine"—what I can only describe as a spaceship, as it didn’t resemble a "typical" UFO. After a few seconds, the craft tilted onto its side and vanished behind the hill.
The observation by Annbjørg Engesvold in 2016
The story behind it is that I was on a trip to Ålen from Trondheim on the afternoon of December 16, 2016. I first spotted the light a little north of the Svøljatunnelen. It followed the valley, but continued inland towards Hessdalen where the river Hersja flows into the Gaula.
I got a bit curious and decided to drive to Hessdalen too. I saw the light pretty much the entire trip, as it was so high in the sky.
I stopped at Hessdalskjølen and called an acquaintance in Hessdalen. He said we might be cut off due to a low battery on our phone. He went out to see it, and saw the light above the telephone mast on Rognsåsen.
He described a rainbow-colored light that shone down towards the mast.
Then our conversation became very metallic and could perhaps be described as "robot voices". Then we were cut off and I assumed he ran out of power. Which he later said did not happen. So I did not call back, but drove after.
The light followed the ridge south of Hersja and therefore went behind the observation station at Vårhus. I then stopped at the exit to Finnsådalen and there the film with buildings and a tractor was filmed.
I stopped just before Tor Moen's house where I filmed for over 4 minutes. I have no idea what this was, but it was not a plane, as I followed it for more than half an hour.
A plane had almost reached Oslo at that time. It was also not a star as it was clearly moving and much closer. For all I know, it could have been a weather balloon. I see that there are pictures posted from the Hessdalen project with lights that have had a similar shape to when I enlarge the picture of the light.
I must also add that I saw the same radiation that my acquaintance talked about with rainbow-colored light against the ground. This was when the light was over the farms at Borren.
The light continued further inland towards Hersjøen when I finished.
The 4-minute film was taken at 16.32 and my first observation was at about 15.00
The observation by Helge Otterå in 2019
Helge is telling his story on a Discord Event.
Helge saw two tall, humanoid figures with elongated limbs and oval heads ran across the road and disappeared into the forest.
The observation by Mathias Tømmervold in 2023
Mathias was fishing on the ice at Lake Øungen, near its southern edge, when he noticed an orange light near the mouth of Skarvan around 5:51 PM. He watched as the light began to rise, pausing occasionally before continuing its ascent. Gradually, it grew weaker until it disappeared.
At 6:04 PM, the light reappeared in the same spot, once again rising and stopping multiple times. It stayed low, below the horizon of the mountain, and seemed to be moving in Mathias' direction, though it was difficult to be certain. The light rose once more, grew dimmer, and finally disappeared for good. Mathias continued watching the area for another two hours, but the light did not return.
Mathias told this during the Town Hall Meeting (Dec, 2024) and another witness saw the exact same movement at a different time and place.
