An Grianán Adult Education College

Venue in Brief

An Grianán, the first residential adult education centre in Ireland, is a charming manor house between long sandy beaches (there are even paths leading to the beach!) and the Boyne Valley. It's roots are the Irish Countrywomen's Association - the oldest and largest women's association in Ireland. The ICA movement started in 1910 with the foundation of the Society of the Unite Irishwomen but assumed its present moniker in 1935 in keeping with the changing political climate.

An Grianán means 'the sunny place'. Built in the late 18th century, it retains the essence of those times in its primarily Georgian composition. The core of the original building remains intact, including a beautiful skylight in the main hallway being marvellously and tastefully preserved. The perfectly-manicured grounds that complete the 58-acre site also allude to a time long since passed. They have 57 rooms in and attached to the main house.

Where is An Grianán Adult Education College located?

You may look up "An Grianan, Newtown, Termonfeckin, Ireland" at Google Maps

An Grianán is on the coast road between Baltray and Termonfechin - 5 miles from Drogheda which is 35 miles north of Dublin. A bus service from Dublin Airport to Drogheda costs €5.00 each way (in 2011); a taxi from Drogheda to the venue would be €14.00 (could be shared)(in 2011). A mini-bus from Drogheda to the venue might be possible, but well know closer to the time. People from the UK may prefer to bring their car on the ferry from Holyhead
